3 Steps to Build Your Athlete Mindset and Mental Strength

Mental strength and mindset contribute to 80% of your success as an action sports athlete. 

What separates the action sports athletes that repeat success and achieve consistent top podium finishes versus other athletes who place top 3 every now and again?

It is how they use the space between their ears. That's right, their brain, their thoughts, and their mindset. 

Our recent guest speakers Todd Jacobs, sports performance mentor to elite action sports athlete Travis Pastrana, Kevin Pearce, Paul Rodriquez, and Olympic Silver Medalist Jagger Eaton, and JJ Thomas, Olympic Bronze Medalist and snowboard coach to legend Shaun White and the US Snowboard Team shared 3 key steps to building a winning mindset. 

1. Process Over Outcomes: Create a routine and process that builds a bridge to your next success. Don't worry about the result, focus on breaking down each step to build your confidence first and foremost.  As Todd Jacobs says if you want to get to the top of the stairs you have to climb one step at a time to get there. 

2. Failure Is Your Greatest Teacher: If you are going to fail, fail magnificently. Everybody gets beat, but you cannot lose as long as you learn something. Use failure as an opportunity to grow and learn, seek it out as a challenge to get better. Failure is your fire if channeled properly. 

3. Never Lose The Love: You have to love what you do, otherwise the pressure will exceed the pleasure. And once that happens you are in trouble.  Keeping the fun in sports is imperative in order to succeed and continue to evolve.  You need to have a way to fall in love over and over again with the sport you do, mix it up, have fun, don't just make every moment about having to win. Remember why you started in this sport in the first place!
