How To Get Sponsored and Most Importantly Stay Sponsored

Winning isn't enough. It just isn't.

When it comes to getting sponsored, staying sponsored, and increasing your compensation year after year you need to do more than just win as an action sports athlete.

Do you want to know what that "more" is?

It's adding value.

Sure, if you are a competitor earning podium finishes is an important part of getting noticed and landing sponsorship deals, don't get me wrong.  But for most sponsors that is just one part of the equation of why they will sponsor you even when budgets get cut (because budgets get cut a lot.)

Let me give you a hint on what adding value means by sharing this quote by John F. Kennedy, "Ask not what can your country do for you - ask what you can do for your country."

So, in terms of adding value to your sponsors what does this mean for you, the action sports athlete?

It's calling up your team manager or the local rep who sponsors you, (or who you want to be sponsored by) and asking them, what can I help with? Is there an on-site demo I can attend? Can I help on a learn to ride or surf day or come to a company function to represent? Do you need me to test any product and give feedback?

Every day athletes/parents are hitting up sponsors asking for stuff, whether that be money, product, or support. Separate yourself from the pack by asking what YOU can do FOR THEM.  Trust us, this will take you far in your career as a professional action sports athlete.

There are times when sponsors must decide between two athletes that have similar results, this is when being the athlete who adds the most value can be quite advantageous. They most likely are going to go with that athlete who has the reputation of being helpful, solution-focused, has a positive attitude, and is a team player.

When sponsors know that they can count on you and are aware that you are willing to step up and help without having to be asked you go from being just a sponsored athlete to an asset.

Learning how to add value is not just important when you are pursuing sponsorship, it is an attribute that will serve you in every aspect of your life, in your community, and in your relationships.

So now that you are done with this blog post, go call your team manager and ask what you can do for them!
